Intruder

High-pitched scolding sounds the alarm as I approach: There’s a stranger in the forest.

Who are you? Friend? Foe?

As the threat level subsides the trilling chatter fades. But black eyes still watch as I squat down with my camera.

Moments later the guardian is off and stillness folds around me again.

    1. Yup, they are all that. One year we had 12 that visited us daily, coming into the yard from various places in our woods. Quite a kafuffle. This summer we have just three siblings (born last year) who have taken ownership. Sadly they recently destroyed two robin nests. The birds, also long-term yard dwellers, weren’t able to fight them off.
