Autumn puts brush to palette
Blends rich colours on the board
Then lightly, deftly
Paints the forest floor.

Would you recognize a raspberry leaf?
I was sure I would — I’ve been picking rasps since I was a kid. But what if that leaf was a different colour? What then?
Playing with colour on the computer my familiar raspberry leaf became unrecognizable. I realized I didn’t know this leaf as well as I thought.
Seeing is deceiving. 🙂
Raspberry Rubus spp.
Of all those that set sail
in the dying light of the year
That rode out
on bone-cold days
Only one
hove up here
Unknown and unnoticed.
Until now.
Last summer’s leaf rewinds time
New buds fast forward it to spring
But linger not in either place
Embrace today
This moment will not come again.
Balsam poplar Populus balsamifera
A light mist dripped over the garden the day before.
Nightfall and the temperature dropped.
By morning frost crystals, like salt grains, dot the lupine leaves.
