The Lies That Bind

Virtual reality: an artificial environment created with software, presented in such a way that the user accepts it as real.

As digital tendrils tighten their grip
We retreat into a world of pixels,
Screen-glow and keystrokes.

We are poorer for it.

The virtual is only a mirror
No more real than reflections cast in water.

  1. The good news is that we have a choice about how deeply to engage with the digital world. Every time a friend begins moaning about the terrible, horrible, unbearable atmosphere on Facebook, for example, I ask: “Why don’t you just leave?” Inevitably, the answer is a variation of, “Oh, I couldn’t do that.” That statement, of course, is code for “I won’t — or don’t want to — do that.”
